Eliza Eliza (echolalia)
a contemporary adaptation of the Pygmalion myth and the classic play by Henrik Ibsen. The show was a single participant, immersive experience with the principal actor, Toby Blome, playing Henry Higgins and the master of ceremonies.
Eliza Eliza used the narrative arc of the protagonist being taught to speak, or more specifically taught to mimic behavioural ticks and vocal patterns of value in the social hierarchy, to explore symmetrical themes of autistic masking, selective mutism, and the overwhelming psychological training that comes with being socialised as a woman.
This work underwent development and a work in progress showing at Sydney University Dramatic Society Summer Slot but was never escalated beyond that due to the artist’s own barriers of disability intervening in their creative practice.
